Wollaber, Carbone, Cappelli, Johnson, Knutsen, Mendel and Hessler find Victory Lane at LRP!

posted on August 6th

This weekend at LRP, we had another Sunday afternoon race and it was a steamy one. It was quite hot up in the stands and the track was slick and greasy. ALL Divisions were on hand and there were no heat races.

The first race was the TQ Midgets and the #21 was on the pole with AJ Hessler on his outside. Hessler was able to get around the #21 on the first lap and led the rest of the way but it wasn't an easy win as Wollaber and Collard were right on his tail the entire race. Wollaber and Collard battled for many laps with Wollaber on the outside. Wollaber was able to get around the #3 of Collard for second but AJ Hessler won the race. The top 3 were Hessler, Wollaber and Collard.

The next race was 1 of 2 street stock features as the field was split into 2 features this weekend. Cory Gallagher started on the pole with Andy Jankowiak on his outside. Andy J got the lead from Gallagher early and was able to lead quite a few laps. Gallagher fell to second and then third as Russell Knutsen was charging through the field and was able to get the second position. The caution came out after Wayne Lavis knocked the foam onto the track in turn 2 giving Knutsen the chance he needed to get around Jankowiak. Russell Knutsen took the lead on lap 12 in the 15 lap feature and led until the checkereds. This was Knutsens second win of the year.

Tom Agen Jr was on the pole in the second street stock feature.  The top 5 cars were tight as Mike Maggiore, Kevin Mendel, Tom Agen Sr and Jim Bryant were all trying to get to the front. Tom Agen Jr led with Mike Maggiore trying to get around him and eventually did. Agen Jr went really hard into 3 a couple laps later and hit the side of Maggiore and Agen Jr spun but Maggiore didn't. This put the "Wookie" Mike Maggiore in the lead. Kevin Mendel was on Maggiores tail and began to use the bottom and high lanes on Maggiore. Mendel got around Wookie after he got loose in turn 2. Jim Bryant was second with Agen Sr third. Kevin Mendel went on to his first career win at lrp. Bryant, Agen Sr, Maggiore and Mutka rounded out the top 5.

Dave Johnson started on the pole in the Super Stock feature and led all the laps in the 10 car field. Rick Widmer had some bad luck as he blew a transmission in turn 2 early in the race which put out the caution. Johnson remained the leader but Wayne Bernhard was close behind as he worked his way up to second. Frank Batista was riding in third and Evans was forth. Mike Scott pulled off with problems and Jay Canonico spun but nobody could get around Johnson and he went on to win his second feature of the season.

The SST Sportsman were up next with Kirk Rutherford and Jerry Gradl on the front row. Gradl fell to last on the first lap as something broke on his car. Rutherford also fell putting Craig Dolphin in the lead. Nick Cappelli was making his way through the field and passed Dolphin at the half way point. Billy Burd was able to charge up to third. Nick Cappelli went on to win the race with Dolphin, Burd, Shepker and Murray rounding out the top 5.

The Late Models were next and the field grew to 14 cars this weekend. Mark Pennell was on the pole but pulled off early with problems. Ron Nurmi inherited the lead with Rich Skora behind him. Joe Carbone started near the back but was able to pass many cars on the track and drove all the way up to first. He cut through cars like a hot knife through butter. Carbone went on to win his first win of the year and his schedule has been very light. Carbone went around the #2 of Nurmi with 4 to go. The top 5 was Carbone, Nurmi, R. Skora, G. Skora and S. Skora.

The final feature of the afternoon were the mighty modifieds. Brett Scherrer was on the pole but fell early giving Dave Wollaber the lead. Wollaber would go on the lead the rest of the laps with some light pressure from the Superman Sege Fidanza behind him. Bobby Holmes was able to get up to third with Hehr and McGrath rounding out the top 5. This was Wollabers first win in the #45 modified.

Next weekend is the big saturday and sunday car show. The next stock car event will be on Saturday, August 19th.
