"The Hotshoe" Chuck Hossfeld wins the US Open ROC 100!

posted on October 7th, 2006

Lancaster Raceway Park finally got some good weather and it couldn't have come at a better time! Part 1 of the 2006 US Open is in the books and boy it was great. The Super Stocks, RoC Modifieds and SST Sportsman all ran in day 1.

The first feature of the night was the Super Stock 30. Kyle Sharpe sat on the pole and the caution flag flew early when the 77 of Kraemer spun on lap 1. As Sharpe slowly fell through the field, Jay Mudra got the lead on lap 2. Dave Johnson drove his way to second and was challenging for the lead on lap 13. Mudra and Johnson were either running side by side or Johnson was right on Mudra's bumper for a majority of the feature. 2006 Track Champion, Wayne Bernhard, got up to 3rd and was behind his teammate Johnson. With 10 to go, Mudra was still the leader. A caution came out with 5 to go giving the drivers a 5 lap shootout to the finish. When the shootout started, Mudra got loose coming out of turn 4 allowing Johnson, Bernhard, Merritt and Batista to get by. Dave Johnson was the new leader and went on to lead the rest of the event picking up the US Open victory. Johnson was in victory lane last year in the Street Stock division, but this year he was in a Super Stock. Johnson won with Bernhard coming in second, RoC Oswego winner Jeff Merritt third, Frank Batista forth and Jay Mudra fifth.

With the RoC Modified race in Mahoning October 8th along with the Whelen Tour race in Stafford, the US Open RoC 100 was pushed up in the schedule.

In a field of 31 Modifieds, Jan Leaty started on the pole with Lee Sherwood on his outside. Jan Leaty kept his lead early and led a majority of the race. Pitting came into strategy around lap 20 when Sege Fidanza spun in turn 2. Tom McGrath and Chuck Hossfeld pit early and it was a good call. Jan Leaty was still the leader with Eric Beers charging up to second. At the half way point, Jan Leaty was the leader with Eric Beers second, Earl Paules third, and Chuck Hossfeld, who pit earlier, forth. Some laps later, the #66 of Bill Hebing stopped in turn 4 brinning out the caution. Jan Leaty, Eric Beers and Earl Paules pit putting Chuck Hossfeld in the lead. Tom McGrath was behind Hossfeld. On a restart, Tom McGrath got around Chuck but when the next caution came out, they put McGrath back to second for jumping the start. This put Hossfeld back in the lead and he would go on to lead the remaining laps and began to pull away from McGrath. Chuck Hossfeld won the RoC Modified 100 with McGrath, Hirschman, Leaty and Holmes rounding out the top 5.

The SST Sportsman race was the final race for day 1 of the 2006 US Open. Neal Dietz started on the pole with John Barber on his outside in a field of 33 cars. As Dietz fell off the pole, Kirk Rutherford got the lead and led the rest of the race. Tony Hanbury was in second and applied some pressure to Rutherford but couldn't get by and Hanbury began to fall back. The race was full of cautions and took a good amount of time to complete the 75 laps. Kirk Rutherford went on to win with Hanbury, Potrebowski, Finnachario, and Harding Jr rounding out the top 5.

Tomorrow, October 8th, is part 2 of the US Open. Heats start at 1pm with TQ Midgets, Cup Lites, Street Stocks and Late Models on schedule. The weather is supposed to be great. What a weekend for the US Open!!!
