Will Thomas wins the MAARA Late Model 100!

posted on October 8th, 2006

The entire 2006 US Open is now in the books. The weekend was great and you couldn't have asked for better weather. On day 2 of the US Open, the TQ Midgets, Cup Lites, Street Stocks and Late Models all ran features.

The first feature of the afternoon was the TQ Midget race. Jamie Collard started on the pole. Dave Wollaber got the lead on lap one and didn't look back. Dan Lawrence moved up to the second position on lap 3. With 5 to go, Dave Wollaber was the leader with Dan Lawrence second, and Jamie Collard third. Wollaber dominated the race and created a large gap between himself and Dan Lawrence. With 5 to go, Jamie Collard and Curtis Friesen were racing hard for third but Collard got the position at the finish. Dave Wollaber went on the win the Midget feature.

The Cup Lites ran there 50 lap feature up next. Scott Wylie started on the pole. Early in the feature, Scott Wylie and Dennis Tyobr ran side by side but Wylie got the lead and led the rest of the feature. The Cup Lite field got strung out and Tybor remained in the second position. Nobody could catch the #32 of Wylie and he went on to win the Cup Lite 50.

36 Street Stocks came out onto the track next for there 35 lap race. Wayne Lavis started on the pole. The caution came out on lap 3 when the 11 car spun in turn 2. Wayne Lavis retained the lead with Anto Anderson and Tom Agen Sr behind him. As Lavis fell through the field, Tom Agen Sr got the lead. Andy Jankowiak and Tim Garlock were coming to the front and Andy Jankowiak was able to get the lead with about 10 laps to go. Tim Garlock was on Jankowiak's bumper for a few laps but Jankowiak was able to keep the lead and went on to win his first ever Street Stock feature. Jankowiak, Garlock, Knutsen, Hoch and Madill rounded out the top 5.

In the MAARA Late Model 100, Rich Skora started on the pole with Joe Carbone on his outside in the 27 car field. Rich Skora got the lead early and Todd Hoddick drove his way up to second. A few laps later, Todd Hoddick got the lead and Will Thomas moved up to second. The race ran with Hoddick first and Thomas second until the last lap when Thomas got around Hoddick on the bottom side and went on to win. It actually made the race exciting as the majority of it was quite bland. Hoddick spun out Thomas after the race and Thomas handled it well in the victory lane interview. Will Thomas won the race and the 2006 MAARA Late Model Championship.

Well, the 2006 Stock Car Racing Season is over and boy was it a struggle. 7 rain outs and some cancelled events really made the season spread out. One things for sure, nobody could've asked for better weather for the US Open. It was a great way to end out the season.
